Autauga, Elmore, Macon and Montgomery counties have been chosen by the Emergency Food and Shelter National program (EFSP) to receive funds in the amounts listed above to assist organizations dedicated to providing food, shelter and supportive services to people with economic emergencies, including our nation's hungry and homeless populations. Congress appropriated $200 million of this funding as supplemental humanitarian funding in the CARES Act (Phase CARES).

The selection for these Federal funds was made by a National Board chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), consisting of representatives from the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, Council of Jewish Federations, Catholic Charities, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, and United Way of America which serves as Secretary and Fiscal Agent. The Board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.

A Local Board made up of representatives from local government, River Region United Way, Salvation Army and others will determine how the funds are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service organizations in the area. The Local Board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds available under this phase of the program.

CRITERIA:

Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local governmental or private voluntary organizations chosen to receive funds must: 1) be nonprofit (if new applicant), must attach a copy of IRS designation letter; 2) have an accounting system; 3) practice non-discrimination; 4) must be currently administering/delivering emergency food and/or shelter programs; and 5) if the organization is a private voluntary organization, it must have a voluntary board. Qualifying organizations are urged to apply.

When applying, please submit the total budget for the program for which you are requesting funds. Budget must include how that total program will be funded. Note:  the requested amount must be less than 50% of the funded program of the requesting agency. These funds are awarded to agencies to supplement current programs. Applicants must be currently providing services and using other agency resources in the area for which they are applying for these funds.
